Recap - 41st Annual CIF State Volleyball Championships

ORANGE, CALIF. – The Southern Region took five of six division matches during the 2018 CIF State Volleyball Championships at Santiago Canyon College. The following is a brief recap of all six contests.

Open Division: Mater Dei def. Central 25-13, 25-12, 25-13

Mater Dei (43-4) won their first State Championship in their fourth attempt as they swept Central (39-6). The Monarchs hit an impressive .432 for the night with Mia Tuaniga and Natalie Berty recording nine kills each, followed by Brielle Mullally and Meg Brown with eight kills apiece. Additionally, Tuaniga and Mullally each totaled 16 assists in the win. Bailey Combs led the Grizzlies with nine kills in the loss.

Division I: Temecula Valley def. Bishop O’Dowd 23-25, 25-23, 28-26, 25-22

Temecula Valley (24-7) claimed their first State crown in their first appearance as they defeated Bishop O’Dowd (34-7) in four sets. Carly Shreenan (16), Emma Rhodes (15) and Hailey Hinkel (10) combined for 41 of the Bears 54 kills, while Jordyn Amoy totaled 45 assists in the win. Michelle Ohwobete led the match with 32 kills in the loss, followed by Jasmine Powell with 15 kills for the Dragons.

Division II: Village Christian def. Los Altos 25-16, 25-23, 25-20

Village Christian (40-9) won their first State title in their second attempt as they swept Los Altos (33-9). Payton Hudspeth led the Crusaders with 14 kills, while Kendall Jensen tallied 33 assists in the win. The Eagles were led by Katie Kishton’s 10 kills in the loss.

Division III: Ontario Christian def. Presentation 21-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-15

Ontario Christian (39-2) won their first State Championship in their first attempt as they defeated Presentation (17-19) in four sets. Annaka Jorgenson led the Knights with 21 kills, followed by Jenna Holmes and Peyton Tazelaar contributing 14 and 13 kills respectively. Additionally, Giselle Vogel (32) and Kiley Goedhart (20) combined for 52 of the Ontario Christian’s 57 assists. Jenna Sandall led the Panthers with 17 kills in the loss.

Division IV: San Luis Obispo def. Hilmar 22-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-11, 15-9

San Luis Obispo (25-14) won their first State title in their first appearance in a five-set battle with Hilmar (35-13). Kayla Craft and Anneke Moersdorf each tallied 19 kills to lead the Tigers to victory, while Sydnie Maurer recorded 33 assists in the win. The Yellowjackets were led by Mikela Labno and Olivia Peterson with 21 and 14 kills respectively.

Division V: Washington Union def. El Camino Real 25-16, 25-20, 25-22

Washington Union (35-7) won their first State Championship in their first appearance as they swept El Camino Real (16-17). Sydney Kuma (26) and Cecilia Lopez (10) led the Panthers combining for 36 of the teams 44 kills, while Maynhia Thao recorded 32 assists in the win. Kayla Ghossein led El Camino Real in the loss with seven kills, while the team recorded a match-high five service aces.
