November 3 Notebook

In this week’s Notebook, we have a section about the Section playoffs. It’s an intersection of fun and competition, rather than a dissection of everything that happened.

Upsetting situations?
The Section playoffs are nearing their conclusion. I have a conclusion of my own:

There have been very few big upsets, and not one that has made me say, “Wow!”

As someone who does the state and regional rankings every week for CIF State, massive upsets are difficult to process because they don’t fit neatly into a rankings model. How does one make sense of a team that’s well under .500 knocking off a team that was 25-1?

Last night, in the Central Coast Section Div. I semifinals, Los Gatos knocked off Branham in four sets. An 18-win team upended a 21-win team. A team that had been in the Central Region rankings defeated a team currently sitting in the No. 18 slot.

That’s as big of an “upset” as we’ve had in this year’s playoffs.

With that in mind, let’s roll through what has happened in the past week…

Playoff fever…catch it!
Let’s start in the Central Section, which held its championship matches last night.

Buchanan, the No. 7 team in our Central Region rankings, upended No. 6 San Luis Obispo in four sets to win Div. I. The Bears rode a hot streak at season’s end all the way to the title, one year after winning Div. II.

The teams were tied at a set apiece before Buchanan rallied to win the next two, 25-19, 25-20, to capture the title. Sammie Aaron led the offense with 21 kills. Clara Garcia and Grace Goudy teamed for 55 digs.

Two red-hot teams met for the Div. II title, with Bakersfield Christian coming away with the 3-1 win over Exeter Union.

The Eagles, who also defeated Exeter in August, won their first Valley title since 2019.

***

Kingsburg repeated as Div. III champions, downing Bullard in four sets. Fresno Christian won a thriller over host Mammoth, 17-15 in the fifth, to repeat as Div. IV champions. California City and Roosevelt of Fresno won Div. V and VI, respectively.

***

Finals are set in the San Diego Section. As expected, Cathedral Catholic and Torrey Pines will meet for the Open title. Cathedral Catholic, last year’s Open State Champion, won its semifinal in four over Bishop’s. The Dons overcame a Game 1 loss to win the next two, 25-5, 25-13, on the way to the win.

Torrey Pines was pushed in the playoffs by both San Marcos and Westview, but the Falcons continue a trend of bending but not breaking. The five-set semifinal win over Westview was their 17th in a row.

The two teams met in September, with Cathedral Catholic winning in five.

Torrey Pines coach Brennan Dean knows what it will take to knock Cathedral Catholic from its perch atop the section.

“We need to defend and win the serve and pass game,” he said. “It will be tough but I like being the underdog.”

Div. I went as expected, with the top two seeds, El Capitan of Lakeside and Francis Parker, qualifying for tomorrow’s championship match.

***

In Div. II, Pacific Ridge, which has had its share of big wins this season, is seeking its first-ever title against the Academy of Our Lady of Peace, which surprised Helix in the other semifinal.

“Pacific Ridge’s finals run can be attributed to the team’s clear sense of their identity through preparation, togetherness, and consistent growth,” said coach Jed Stotsenberg. “They know who they are, what their teammates need, keep each other accountable, control what they can control while leaving everything on the floor every match. They are getting better and better as the playoffs continue and the key to winning is letting the foundation they have built this season shine Friday night.”

San Pascual/Mission Hills and Valley Center/Oceanside will clash for the Div. III and IV titles, respectively.

***

The Los Angeles Section Open final will pit El Camino Real and Taft. ECR owns a 2-1 edge this season over Taft, which has won 40 matches. ECR last won in 2015, and Taft in 2006.

Marshall and Verdugo Hills qualified for the Division I final. GALA, which won Div. III last year will meet the Los Angeles CES Unicorns in the Div. II championship match.

The marquee event in the Southern Section is state No. 1 Mater Dei versus No. 2 Mira Costa for the Division 1 title. The same two teams met in the championship match of the Durango Fall Classic in September, with Mater Dei rebounding from a Game 1 loss to win.

Mater Dei made the finals by overpowering Sierra Canyon in its last match to finish up pool play 3-0. The key, coach Dan O’Dell said, was his team’s strength on the pins, as Isabel Clark, Layli Ostovar, and Cymarrah Gordon combined for 43 kills.

“Those three have been dynamite for the playoffs,” said O’Dell. Clark has averaged more than five kills per set, with Ostovar and Gordon at or over four kills per.

O’Dell also praised senior libero Malyssa Cawa for picking everything up off the floor and setter Julia Kakkis for being a steady floor general.

Mira Costa and Huntington Beach were both 2-0 in their pool heading into Tuesday’s showdown for a spot in the final. Huntington Beach, with its roster full of scrappy and veteran beach players, scrapped and dug and led significantly in the first set and had leads in all three, but the Oilers ultimately were worn down by Costa, which separated itself by winning the longer rallies.

“I was impressed by our fight,” Mustang coach Cam Green said.

Mira Costa will need to fight on Saturday to knock off Mater Dei for the crown.

“It will come down to serve and pass,” Green observed. “They won that battle in sets 2 and 3 in Durango. We’re going to have to win that. At the end of the day who gets the other team out of system more will have the greatest chance for success.”

Division 2 sees JSerra and Orange Lutheran. OLu made the final match by knocking off Redondo Union in a mild upset. Freshman Westley Matavao had 27 kills and junior Maylynn Mitchell added 18 for OLu in the five-set win.

Orange Lutheran and JSerra have split matches this season.

State-ranked Beckman and Campbell Hall will play for the Div. 3 title.

Beckman knocked off Canyon of Anaheim in one semifinal, while Campbell Hall outlasted South Torrance in the other.

“The semi-final against South was a well-fought match on both sides,” said Kat Thyer, Campbell Hall’s first-year head coach. “South made some great in-game adjustments and forced us to make changes as well. I'm proud of how we kept our composure and continued to adjust throughout, leading us to a spot in the championship match.”

***

El Dorado and Capo Valley Christian will meet for the Div. 4 title, while Temple City and Rancho Christian will square off in Div. 5.

Temple City celebrates its first Section final since 2002

Temple City made the final by defeating much taller Corona Centennial in one semifinal. The Rams have been relying all season on Stanford-bound setter turned outside hitter Taylor Yu and that match was no different, as the senior recorded 33 kills and five aces in the sweep.

Temple City is making its first appearance in a final since 2002. Its opponent, Rancho Christian, is similar in size and personnel, said Temple City coach Nathan Yu.

“If we stay true to who we have aspired to be all season long (serve tough, keep balls off the ground, and let Taylor finish off rallies), I like our chances,” the coach said.

In Div. 9, Moreno Valley will play for a Southern Section title for the first time against top-seeded Rosemead.

Moreno Valley, which entered the playoffs under .500 on the season, had to go through cross-town rivals Canyon Springs in the semifinals, prevailing 3-1. The Vikings are very young, with three freshmen, three sophomores, and two juniors on varsity, but have rallied around only senior, Venus Bush, during the playoff run.

“It is amazing when the culture and resiliency are positively strong how far a young and rebuilding team can go,” said assistant coach Jennifer Strawn.

Strawn added that head coach Lea Snell has been an inspiration to all. A coach for almost two decades, Snell was going to retire after last season, “but we talked her back into one more year,” Strawn said. “She knew coming into this year that it would be a rebuilding year for us but didn’t realize how well our super young rebuilding team would be. It is always great when the girls get along and support each other. She is so excited that she stayed the extra year and that we are making history. It is always nice to go out on top.”

Two Northern California powerhouses, Saint Francis of Mountain View and Archbishop Mitty, will play for the Central Coast Section Open Division title. Saint Francis won it last year. The teams have split four meetings in 2023.

In Div. I, it’s Los Gatos and Salinas. Salinas has been hot of late and the Cowboys swept Mountain View in a semifinal yesterday. Mountain View coach Dave Winn coached Salinas coach Chloe Goldman at City Beach, but the pupil got the best of the master last night.

Woodside and Aragon will be Div. II combatants. Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep and Burlingame will play for Div. III, while Harbor and Notre Dame Belmont will vie for the Div. IV title.

Harbor, sparked by OH Isla Johnson, has been on a hot streak and got revenge on Mercy of Burlingame in a semifinal yesterday. Mercy swept the Pirates in the Section final last year.

NDB seems to have caught fire in the playoffs after a tough stretch to finish off the regular season.

***

In the San Francisco Section, Lowell and Balboa will seek the title. Lowell is region-ranked and the favorite, but Balboa has been competitive in two losses this season.

***

In the Sac-Joaquin Section, St. Mary’s of Stockton and Rocklin are the last two standing in Div. 1. While the Rams have rolled through opponents, Rocklin needed five sets to get by Oak Ridge in a classic semifinal. Sophomore outsides Addy Scheitlin and Gianna Bogan combined for 36 kills in the win.

Granite Bay and Roseville headline the Div. 2 card.

Christian Brothers, getting nice work from libero Elia Constancio, OH Sydney Wallin, and MB Faith Rabb-Patterson, rolled into the Div. III title tilt, where it will face Central Catholic. The Ripons, Christian and regular, will meet to determine Div. 4.

***

The North Coast Section Div. 1 championship match will be a heavyweight battle between state-ranked Foothill of Pleasanton and Marin Catholic. Foothill, led all year by setter Katie Salonga and OH Paige Bennett, has lost just once all year, to an Amador Valley team it subsequently defeated three times, including in the semifinals.

Branson, the defending state champion in Div. I, and Redwood of Larkspur will clash for the Div. 2 title.

It'll be Tamalpais and University School of San Francisco for the Div. 3 title.

Tamalpais is excited to be going to the finals in the North Coast Section

Tam won its first two playoff matches down two starters, but both senior MB Zoe Lyko and junior OH Natalia Clifford returned for the semifinal against Acalanes, a sweep. Grace Widdifield led the team with eight kills including a thunderous kill towards the end of Game 3 to give Tim the lead for good. Emmeline Sandgren added 26 assists and three aces.

Coach Ray Karter said that the addition of Long Beach State alum Raimi Mitchell-Young to the coaching staff has been key to the team’s success.

“She brings such a wealth of knowledge and understanding for the game as well as a practiced eye to help see both what our team needs to do and what the other team is doing so we can make adjustments,” Karter said. “We are so lucky to have her.”

Karter added that San Francisco University will be a challenging championship match opponent.

“They are a strong hitting team, so we will need to serve tough and pass well enough to be able to attack as much as possible to keep their hitters from getting into a rhythm,” he explained. “When they do pass well we will have to set up the block well to give our defense a chance against their hitters.”

***

Head-Royce made the Div. 4 final by defeating top-seeded Cardinal Newman.

“Our middles are slowly getting better, which is a bonus to a pretty good pin attack,” said coach Tate Walthall.

The Jayhawks take on Justin-Siena and OH Anna Hanson for the title.

“If we are going to do well on Saturday and beyond we are going to have to find a level of consistency that is much higher than what we are creating at this point,” Walthall said. “Our libero is very good, our setter continues to grow and we are only missing a little consistency that I’m counting on as we go on this season.”

In Division 5, defending state Div. V champion Berean Christian will take on Bay School for top-dog status.

“Coming off our first-ever DV State Championship last year, we had high expectations for this season, only graduating two seniors from last year,” said coach Lucas Abbott. “Our libero, Megan Rost, has been doing an amazing job keeping us in some tougher matches with great defense, and our offense has many powerful options including OH Sophie Hall, OH Annasophia Vranjes, and MB/OH Marley Seelye. Our setter, Le Ana Cimarra, has done a great job spreading the ball around and has really improved a lot this season. We added three players this season to the returning eight, including a ninth-grader, Hanna Lavino, who is making an immediate impact at middle. We won our league, going 10-0, and are undefeated at home this year thus far.”

Finally, in the Northern Region, region-ranked Pleasant Valley will face Foothill of Palo Cedro for the Div. 2 title (There are no Div. 1 schools by enrollment in the entire section).

West Valley and Orland will meet to determine Div. 3, Willows and U-Prep are the Div. 4 finals representatives and East Nicolaus and Trinity will face off in Div. 5.

Trinity, after its big win over Hamilton in the Northern Section

Trinity advanced to the finals by knocking off Hamilton, the No. 2 seed, in five sets.

“Trinity has a trifecta of passing (Jaden Brown), setting (Gwen Hansen), and hitting (Chloe Albiez),” said head coach Denice Cody. “This team has the grit to pull off wins when it counts.  We are on a 22-game win streak and looking for one more going into the section championship this Saturday vs. East Nicolas.”

Albiez is the No. 2 kill leader in all of California.

“To beat East Nic we will need to have the passing so our offense can do their job,” Cody said.  “If we get the ball to our setters, we will win the game.”
