October 20 Notebook

Another Friday, another Notebook, this one full of stats and playoff coverage. Yowza!

Southern Section jumps into the pool

As forecast, Div. 1 of the Southern Section playoffs – the only playoff in the section to be pool play rather than bracket play -- wound up with these eight teams:

Pool A
Mater Dei
Sierra Canyon
Marymount

Palos Verdes

Pool B
Mira Costa
Huntington Beach
Alemany
Los Alamitos

All eight teams are ranked within the top 20 in the latest statewide rankings.

Play got underway in Div. 1 on Wednesday with three sweeps and a five-set thriller.

Top-seeded Mater Dei won a close Game 1 versus Palos Verdes on its way to a sweep. Isabel Clark and Cymarrah Gordon teamed for 32 kills and Julia Kakkis had 40 assists, 10 kills, three blocks, and two aces in the win.

In the other Pool A match, Marymount avenged two losses to league foe Sierra Canyon by winning in five, 15-12, on an ace serve from Annika Anderson. OH Grace Martin shined in the win for the Sailors.

In Pool B, No. 2 overall seed Mira Costa dominated Los Alamitos. Simone Roslon, one of two outstanding sophomore left sides, had 11 kills, six digs, and three blocks to lead the Mustangs.

Huntington Beach dominated Alemany in the other match. Haylee Lafontaine had 18 kills and Dani Sparks had a whopping 51 assists in the three-set win.

***
State No. 10 Beckman finds itself in Div. 3. The Patriots were determined to be “Div. 3 quality” based on a rankings system that considers results over the previous two years. Coach Darin McBain said that he was shocked to learn that his team, which is currently 28-5, was in Div. 3. The team went 1-2 during the regular season versus Div. 1 teams, with a win over Palos Verdes and losses to both Mater Dei and Sierra Canyon.

Dancing on the sand?

Rio Americano had a banner weekend at the NorCal Invitational

Despite being down two players, Rio Americano swept its way through the Nor Cal Invitational on the weekend. It helped ease the sting of a sweep at the hands of Christian Brothers the Monday before.

“This weekend they had a goal to hold every team under 20 points, by focusing on limiting our errors, by being more defensively focused, and by making sure we established our middles early and kept them active,” said coach John Grix.

The tournament title was the third for the Raiders this season.

Sophomore OH Camden Kallhoff led the team with 33 kills, 10 aces, 25 digs, and 33 receptions at a 2.0 clip. Senior middles Emilie Thoreson and Alice Tully contributed 23 kills and eight blocks and 21 kills and 10 blocks, respectively. Senior Grace Stone put up 105 assists, averaging more than 10 per set. Libero Livia Bacchi had 30 receptions passing a 2.2, along with eight aces and 33 digs.

A Pleasant Saturday in Chico

Viking Classic champions Pleasant Valley of Chico

Pleasant Valley won its Viking Classic on Saturday, defeating Christian Brothers for the second time this season in the championship match.

All five seniors shined in their final Viking Classic. OH Sophia Winter had 10 kills and zero errors on 19 swings and libero Kendal Thau had 19 digs in the championship match. OH Kayla Johnson, RS Sadie Moore, and setter Grace Ferro, the tournament MVP, also played with distinction.

Who’s the best?

The Sierra Foothill League in the Sac-Joaquin Section has been competitive in 2023.

Five of the six teams have been state or region-ranked this year

Four teams, Rocklin, Folsom, Oak Ridge, and Granite Bay, are ranked among the top 16 in yesterday’s North Region top 25.

And those teams have been beating each other up!

Rocklin won the league, at 8-2, with a sweep of Whitney last night, but has five-set losses to both Folsom and Granite Bay.

Oak Ridge took second after yesterday’s five-set win over Folsom. Oak Ridge couldn’t solve Rocklin, but is 3-0 over Folsom and has split with Granite Bay.

Folsom and Granite Bay both finished 6-4 in league. Five of Folsom’s seven losses all year have come versus league opponents. Granite Bay is suddenly super hot, with wins over each of its league opponents over the past two weeks after starting 1-4.

“This year seems to be a little more parity than usual,” said Rocklin head coach Dave Muscarella.

“The SFL has been the strongest league for several years,” asserted Oak Ridge coach Trevin Morgan. “Each year you may have one stand out but every match is tough and could go either team’s way.  This year the gap between the top teams has narrowed, which has just made each team stronger.  Case in point: Granite Bay.  Last year they were 0-10 in this league and, with their new coach, have turned things around.

Playoff brackets have yet to be determined but look for all four to contend for SJS titles, with everyone likely in Div. I other than Granite Bay, which should be Div. II.

Over the last four years, there has been an SFL representative in a section title game.

“In the last two, the SFL has won multiple SJS Section titles each year (Oak Ridge & Granite Bay 2021, Oak Ridge & Whitney 2022),” said Morgan. “I think parity is just part of the SFL DNA and, next year, will be even more so with the addition of St. Francis and Davis.”

In action last night from the state top 25…

The state top 25 went 7-1 last night, with the only loss, by No. 21 St. Ignatius, coming at the hands of No. 20 Sacred Heart Prep in four sets in WCAL action. No. 5 Saint Francis of Mountain View also prevailed in that league, sweeping Archbishop Riordan.

The five other wins all came in Southern Section playoff action.

No. 10 Beckman and No. 16 Campbell Hall both won in Div. 3. No. 18 Redondo Union, No. 19 JSerra, and No. 25 South Pasadena all won first-round matches in Div. 2.

Jessica Bates had a big night in JSerra’s win, producing 20 assists, 17 digs, and six aces.

Ingrid Zahn and Jenna Garner teamed for 24 kills and Kendall Taylor added 29 assists in South Pasadena’s win over Chaparral.

News and notes…

Newport Harbor
stunned 2022 state Div. II champion Chaminade in five sets in Southern Section Div. 2 play on the road. The Sailors, who played Div. 1 last year but were hit hard by graduation, got 34 kills, 14 digs, and three aces from freshman OH Ella Olson. Newport’s other freshman attacker, Vladimira Kotzakov, added 16 kills, while senior setter Drue Coberly contributed 41 assists and seven digs…

***

Keep an eye on Eagle Rock in the Los Angeles City Section in the coming years. The Eagles core group includes three sophomores, setter Iliana Diaz, MB/RS Victoria Dennis, and MB Ella Smith, and two freshmen, outsides Milie Lopez and Angiel Salas

***

Tuesday’s sweep of Amador Valley helped Foothill of Pleasanton complete an undefeated run through the East Bay Athletic League for the Falcons. Junior Kaycie Burdick and senior Paige Bennett both notched double-doubles in the win, combining for 27 kills and 26 digs.

***

Windsor, ranked sixth in the CIF State North Region rankings this week, won its league for the second straight year, with a perfect 10-0 showing. Before last season, the Jaguars had only won one league championship, in a three-way tie for first in 2016.

Windsor’s standout senior attacker Taylor Boyce hit two milestones this week. She passed 400 kills for the season and 1,000 kills over her high school career…

***

Harbor of Santa Cruz went on the road and swept Santa Cruz on Tuesday to wrap up a league title. Isla Johnson led the way for the Pirates with 15 kills. Both of Santa Cruz’ league losses this season came to Harbor.

Harbor’s league title is its first outright since 2012. The Pirates last won league in 2019, when they shared the title.

***

Palo Alto clinched the SCVAL-De Anza Division title with a five-set win at Los Gatos on Tuesday, then followed up yesterday with a sweep of Mountain View.

The Vikings won the league (11-0 with one match remaining) after last year’s injury-riddled campaign saw them go 3-9. Paly has benefited from the arrival of freshman OH Maura Hambly, who provides a nice 1-2 punch with senior attacker Kylie Yen, the team’s leading hitter.

Mighty Mites

We asked coaches this week to tell us about their “Mighty Mites.”

A Mighty Mite is a six-rotation or front row player who stands 5-6 or shorter and is making major contributions to her team this year. She is not a three-rotation setter or just a back row contributor.

Here’s what we received:

Alyssa Chu, 5-5 Soph. OH, Patrick Henry – Chu consistently competes at the net and is always able to find different ways to score. “She often gets overlooked by other teams because of her height,” said coach David Chau. “Until she jumps…”

Kennedy Cutler, 5-6 Sr. OH, Redwood (Visalia) – Cutler leads the Central Region-ranked Rangers in kills with 296 and is one of Redwood’s impact players in the back row as well. She is a smart, toolsy hitter and has earned her captaincy by being a true leader.

Iliana Diaz, 5-4 Soph. S, Eagle Rock – Targeted for an outside hitter role, Eagle Rock’s coaches saw Diaz setting in a pickup game and made other plans. She took over the starting role at the beginning of the season and never looked back as she learned on the job. She projects as an impact player for the Eagles over the next two seasons.

Gyneth Guevarra
, 5-6 Fr. MB, Northwood (Irvine) – The team leader in blocks, Guevarra hit .222 for the year and even made an impact serving and playing back row defense. Coach Nicole Grau shared that a referee said this to her after one match: “I thought you were crazy for putting this short girl in the middle, but then I saw her jump and swing!” This impact freshman would be Freshman of the Year in conference if such an award existed in the Pacific Coast.

Sade Ilawole, 5-2 Sr. S, Sierra Canyon – One of the most exciting players in California, Ilawole leads the defending Southern Section Div. 1 champs by using her athleticism and intelligence to deliver beautiful sets to a cadre of terminal hitters. She is intense and skilled in the back row and even has 27 blocks playing against the toughest competition in the state.

Dani Lee
, 5-5 Jr. S, University (San Francisco) – Lee starts and plays all six rotations every match for the Red Devils because she brings precision and consistency, exceptional decision-making, and quiet fire, noted coach Bob Hillman. “Not only that, but she figures out how to score under unusual circumstances, such as when she set a back three to the middle of the court from out of bounds in last year's NorCal tournament,” Hillman added. “She had 1155 assists as a sophomore and would have at least that many this year if she hadn't missed a month with an ankle sprain. Oh, and I wouldn't want to stand in zone 1 against her jump serve!!!”

Madden Mesina-Rowe 5-6 Jr. OH, Pomona Catholic – One of the top attackers in Div. 7 of the Southern Section, both in number of kills and hitting percentage, Mesina-Rowe’s personality is as big as her vertical, said coach Brenda Ramirez.

Sophia Neeley, 5-5 Sr. OH, Yosemite – Neeley is an impact player in all rotations for the 30-13 Badgers. She is scrappy on defense, where she has amassed 424 digs; strong on attack, with 147 kills; spectacular on serve receive, having notched 197 perfect passes; and excellent behind the service line, with 47 aces and 95 percent serving.

Annika Ramirez, 5-5 Sr. OH, Bullard – Ramirez was Bullard’s best player in 2023, leading the team in kills with 352, aces with 81, digs with 407, AND passing rating at 2.07.

Sophie Shonauer, 5-5 Sr. OH, Stockdale – Coach Maria Collatz calls Shonauer “brutally explosive.” The athletic, big-leaping senior has 275 kills for a surprise team and also has amassed 355 digs. Collatz said that she is the team’s go-to hitter, best passer, and “one of the best defensive players I have coached in 38 years.”

Hailey Song, 5-4 Sr. OH, Eagle Rock – Song was an All-City libero as a sophomore before taking last year off to focus on club beach volleyball. She returned to the court for her senior year and became an impact attacker despite a nagging injury and lingering illness. “The team is notably better with her in the lineup, and poised to make a run at LACS D2,” noted coach Jeff Elam.

Ava Santos, 5-5 Sr. MB, Salesian College Preparatory – “Our Mighty Mite is AMAZING!” exclaimed coach Michaela Ahlenslager. “Ava is an impact player from her leadership down to her work ethic.” Extremely explosive and as high off the ground as she is fast off of it, this senior captain will leave a void next year that will be hard to fill.

Layla Tejeda, 5-5 Jr. OH, Canyon (Canyon Country) – The junior gets it done front row and back, with 124 kills and a 1.76 serve-receive rating.

Olivia Tenedora
, 5-4 Sr. OH, Mammoth – Tenedora uses a vertical leap near 30 inches and brute strength to terrorize opponents. A joy to watch, she has 200 kills on the year for the Huskies.

Unsung Heroes

We asked coaches last week to tell us about their team’s “unsung hero.” An unsung hero is a player who probably does not start or, if she does, is not one who fills the stat sheet, but is integral to team success for any number of myriad reasons.

Here are the ones we received since first publishing:

MaeLana Clark, 6-2 Sr. MB, Pacific (Garden Grove) – The first to volunteer for anything, Clark is an amazing leader and extremely dedicated to the program. She is willing to do whatever it takes on the floor and off of it.

Ava Morandi, 5-7 Sr. libero/DS, University (San Francisco) – Part of a large and talented senior class, Morandi doesn’t play as much as she’s like. Nevertheless, said coach Bob Hillman, “She's a captain of our team and a vocal leader who pushes us in practice, provides a steadying influence with her ball control off the bench, and - above all - sets an example for younger athletes with her commitment and focus. Oh, and she creates the best hype videos in the school and probably the entire North Coast Section!”
