SACRAMENTO – Recaps from Saturday’s (Day 2) action of the 2017 CIF State Basketball Championships.

 

Open Division Boys: Bishop Montgomery def. Woodcreek, 74-67

Quick Facts:

  • Bishop Montgomery won their fourth State Championship in their fifth appearance.
  • Seniors Ethan Thompson and Jordan Shackel combined for 46 of the Knights 74 points recording 26 and 20 points respectively. Junior Davis Singleton was next contributing 14 points and six assists in the win.
  • As a team, Bishop Montgomery shot 50.0% (9-of-18) from beyond the arc.
  • Woodcreek was led by junior Jordan Brown’s double-double of 35 points and 17 rebounds. Senior Tyrell Roberts added 15 points in the loss.
  • Sportsmanship Award Winners: Jackson Hughes (Woodcreek) and Jordan Schakel (Bishop Montgomery) 

 

Open Division Girls: Clovis West def. Archbishop Mitty, 44-40

Quick Facts:

  • Clovis West won their first State Championship in their first try.
  • Senior Sarah Bates led the Golden Eagles with 12 points, followed by fellow seniors Megan Anderson and Danae Marquez with nine points each.
  • Archbishop Mitty was led by sophomore Haley Jones with her double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Madeline Holland added 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
  • Sportsmanship Award Winners: Madison Campbell (Clovis West) and Krissy Miyahara (Archbishop Mitty)

 

Division II Boys: Esperanza def. Moreau Catholic, 72-65

Quick Facts:

  • Esperanza won their first State title in their first attempt.
  • The Aztecs were led by junior Brendan Harrick with 25 points,followed by senior Kezie Okpala’s double-double of 22 points and 12 boards.
  • As a team, Esperanza shot 52.3% (23-of-44) for the night.
  • Moreau Catholic was led by freshman Kyree Walker with a double-double of 20 points and 10 boards. Senior Damari Milstead added 22 points in the loss.
  • Sportsmanship Award Winners: Jullen Ison (Moreau Catholic) and Garrett Geiger (Esperanza)

 

Division II Girls: Vanden def. Mater Dei, 64-62

Quick Facts:

  • Vanden won their first State Championship in their first attempt.
  • The Vikings were led by senior Julia Blackshell-Fair with her double-double of 20 points and 21 rebounds and eight assists. Juniors Deirdre Huff and Myli Martinez contributed 14 and 12 points respectively.
  • Mater Dei, making their 12th State Championship appearance, was led by senior Cyndi Lewis with her double-double of 23 points and 12 boards. Senior Jayda Adams added 19 points in the loss.
  • Sportsmanship Award Winners: Myli Martinez (Vanden) and Kendyll Toomey (Mater Dei)
 

 

Division IV Boys: St. Patrick-St. Vincent def. Helix, 59-46

Quick Facts:

  • St. Patrick-St. Vincent won their first State title in their first appearance.
  • The Bruins were led by senior BJ Standley’s 16 points, followed by senior Tavian Henderson with his double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Seniors Marquel Johnson and Romeo Mays each contributed 12 points in the win.
  • As a team, the Bruins shot 40.8% (20-of-49) from the floor for the day.
  • Helix was led by junior Miles Norris double-double of 11 points and 10 boards, while senior Jaylen Arnold added a double-double of his own, 10 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Sportsmanship Award Winners: Jaylen Arnold (Helix) and Romeo Mays (St. Patrick-St. Vincent)

 

Division IV Girls: West Campus def. Los Osos, 63-55

Quick Facts:

  • West Campus won their first State Championship in their first try.
  • Junior Kiara Jefferson led the Warriors with 24 points and eight rebounds, followed by freshman Gabriella Rones with 16 points. Senior Namiko Adams recorded a game-high six assists in the win.
  • Los Osos was led by freshman Breanna Ha with 24 points, while fellow freshman Destiny Okonkwo was the game leader on the boards with 11 rebounds.
  • Sportsmanship Award Winners: Destiny Okonkwo (Los Osos) and Gabriella Rones (West Campus)
