High School Teams with Highest GPA in the State Honored
SACRAMENTO, CALIF. — The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) today announced 34 State Academic Team Champions for the 2022-23 school year. The CIF State Academic Team Champions program was initiated in 1996 as a way to reward teams with the highest collective grade point averages, based on an unweighted 4.0 scale, in their respective sport.
CIF State Academic Team Champions will receive a banner, suitable for display in their school gym, to recognize this accomplishment. All nominees were their respective CIF Section Academic Team Champions. Section offices forwarded their winners to the state office for consideration.
The North Coast and San Diego Sections had 10 teams represented, followed by eight teams from the Southern Section. The Sac-Joaquin Section had four teams, followed by Central Coast with two teams.
Branson (NCS) had three teams accomplish a state-high team GPA, the most of any school.
In total, 10 teams achieved a 4.00 GPA. Two girls wrestling teams (Rio Vista and St. Bernard’s, Eureka) and two basketball teams (Academy Our Lady of Peace and Stone Ridge Christian) each accomplished a 4.00 GPA. Mater Dei Catholic had the boys cross country team and girls tennis team each accomplishing a 4.00 GPA. While the girls golf team from River Valley, the girls track & field team from South Fork and the girls cross country team from Borrego Springs also each achieved a 4.00 GPA, as well as the boys swim and dive team from Branson.
