Buchanan Boys Win Fourth Consecutive State Wrestling Championship and San Fernando Girls Win First State Wrestling Crown
BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. — The CIF State Wrestling Championships concluded on Saturday as the Buchanan boys won their fourth consecutive State title, fifth overall scoring 235 points. Rounding out the top three boys’ teams were Gilroy (182 points) and Clovis (171.5 points) securing second and third place respectively. For the girls San Fernando won their first State Championship scoring 104 points, with Menlo Atherton (92 points) and Birmingham (76 points) placing second and third respectively.
Individually, Jesse Vasquez (138-pounds), a junior from Excelisor Charter, became only the 25th wrestler in CIF State Boys Wrestling Championship 47-year history to win three State titles.
Additionally, Jadan Abas of Rancho Bernardo (145-pounds), Richard Figueroa (106-pounds) of Selma, Tavi Heidelberg (235-pounds) of McClatchy, Matthew Olguin (160-pounds) of Buchanan and Maximo Renteria (120-pounds) of Buchanan each claimed their second individual State title. Also, four freshman girls each won a State crown: Amit Elor of College Park (150-pounds), Lillian Freitas of Pitman (143-pounds), Leah Gaitan of Yucaipa (106-pounds) and Jennifer Soto of Orland (111-pounds).
