40th Annual State Girls Volleyball Championships Recap

ORANGE, CALIF. – The Southern Region took four of six division matches during the 2017 CIF State Volleyball Championships at Santiago Canyon College. Archbishop Mitty (Open Division) claimed a record 14th State title.  The following is a brief recap of all six games.

 

Open Division: Archbishop Mitty def. Mater Dei 25-19, 25-18, 27-25      BOX

Archbishop Mitty (37-5) won their sixth consecutive State Championship (14th overall) as they swept Mater Dei (37-6). Nicole Liddle led Mitty with 16 kills, followed by Julia DeVine with 10 kills, while MaKaela Tanaka tallied 31 assists in the win. Natalie Berty led Mater Dei with 11 kills on the night.

Division I: Santa Margarita def. James Logan 25-19, 25-12, 25-13     BOX

Santa Margarita (34-9) won their second State title in their sixth appearance as they swept James Logan (40-5). Sarah Ciszek led the Eagles with 15 kills, while Devon Chang recorded 34 assists in the win. Tatiana Toleafoa led James Logan 13 kills in the loss.

 

Division II: Sierra Canyon def. Sacred Heart Prep 25-18, 28-26, 25-22     BOX

Sierra Canyon (38-7) won their first State title in their first attempt as they swept Sacred Heart Prep (29-9). May Pertofsky led the Trailblazers with 16 kills, followed by Jaylen Jordan and Zoie Stewart with 11 kills each, while Taylor Simpson recorded 35 assists in the win. The Gators were led by Cate Desler’s 24 kills and Haley Martella’s 39 assists in the loss.

 

Division III: Point Loma def. Lincoln, SF 25-18, 25-18, 27-25     BOX

Point Loma (23-12) won their first State Championship in their second attempt as they defeated Lincoln, SF (36-9). Charlie Ekstrom (17) and Sierra Caffo (16) combined for 33 of the Pointers 48 kills, while Maggie Wolf tallied 38 assists for the day. Lana Radakovic led the Mustangs with 14 kills in the loss. Lincoln made history appearing for the first time in a girls volleyball state final by any San Francisco Section school.

 

Division IV: Presentation def. Rancho Bernardo 14-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15, 15-13      BOX

Presentation (20-21) won their second State crown in their third appearance as they defeated Rancho Bernardo (25-15). Kathryn LeBaron led the Panthers with 18 kills and a .548 hitting percentage, while Serrena Zanotto recording 50 assists in the win. Julia Kallen led the Broncos with 27 kills, while Lauren Quan totaled six service aces in the loss.

 

Division V: Maranatha Christian def. San Marin 25-23, 25-10, 25-20     BOX

Maranatha Christian (34-1) won their first State Championship in their first appearance as they swept San Marin (19-12). Amy Buffini (17) and Jordyn Ward (10) led the Eagles combining for 27 of the teams 37 kills, while Alysha Buffini recorded 31 assists in the win. As a team Maranatha totaled 16 service aces for the day. Emily O’Brien led San Marin in the loss with six kills, followed by Kelsea Bergerson and Liz King with five kills each.
