SACRAMENTO – Recaps from Friday’s (Day 1) action of the 2017 CIF State Basketball Championships.

 

Division I Boys:  Roosevelt def. James Logan, 54-45

Quick Facts:

  • Roosevelt won their first State Championship in their first appearance.
  • Roosevelt senior Matt Mitchell was the leader of the night with his double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds and three blocks.
  • James Logan was led by senior Noah Conner’s 14 points, followed by sophomore Gabriel Hawkins and senior Jordan McGlory who contributed 13 and 10 points respectively.
  • Sportsmanship Award Winners: Noah Conner (James Logan) and Matt Mitchell (Roosevelt) 

 

Division I Girls: Windward def McClatchy, 53-41

Quick Facts:

  • Windward won their second State title in their fourth appearance at the CIF State Championships.
  • Windward sophomore Charisma Osborne led all scorers with 26 points, followed by junior Sela Kay with 10 points.
  • As a team the Wildcats shot 40.9% (18-of-44) from the floor in the win.
  • McClatchy was led by senior Jordan Cruz with 11 points in the loss.
  • Sportsmanship Award Winners: Kamaree Donald (McClatchy) and Sela Kay (Windward)

 

Division III Boys:  Mission def. Villa Park, 82-75 OT

Quick Facts:

  • The Mission Bears secured their first State Championship in their first appearance.
  • Mission senior Niamey Harris led all scorers with 31 points, followed by senior Jayden Foston with 21 points.
  • As a team the Bears shot 50.9%(28-of-55) for the night and 50.0% (9-of-18) from behind the arc.
  • Senior Myles Franklin led the Spartans with 28 points in the loss, while junior Matthew Lanzone was the leader on the boards for the night with 15 rebounds.
  • As a team, Villa park shot 91.3% (21-of-23) from the free-throw line.
  • Sportsmanship Award Winners: Evan Battey (Villa Park) and Niamey Harris (Mission)

 

 

Division III Girls: Rosary Academy def. Campolindo, 62-45

Quick Facts:

  • Rosary Academy won their first State Championship in their first appearance.
  • Junior Rebekah led the Royals with her triple-double of 12 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists, while senior Camille Lira contributed a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.
  • As a team, Rosary Academy shot 41.2% (21-of-51) on the day and 45.0% (9-of-20) from the three-point line.
  • Campolindo was led by junior Haley Van Dyke with her double-double of 22 points and 25 rebounds.
  • Sportsmanship Award Winners: Grace McGuire (Campolindo) and Camille Lira (Rosary Academy)
 

Division V Boys: Rolling Hills Prep def. St. Francis, 47-46

Quick Facts:

  • Rolling Hills Prep claimed their first State title in their first appearance.
  • The Huskies were led by sophomore Chris Koon (13 points), freshman JT Tan (12 points) and junior Alex Garcia (11 points).
  • St. Francis junior Jason Gallo led all scorers on the day with 15 points.
  • Sportsmanship Award Winners: Alex Garcia (Rolling Hills Prep) and Jason Gallo (St. Francis)

 

Division V Girls: Eastside College Prep def. Rolling Hills Prep, 63-40

Quick Facts:

  • Eastside College Prep won their second consecutive State Championship in their third consecutive trip to the State Finals.
  • Sophomore Zion Gabriel led the Panthers with 26 points en route to setting a new CIF State Championship record with eight three-pointers in a game (previous record was six).
  • Eastside sophomore Mina Tameilau was the leader on the boards with 12 rebounds in the win.
  • As a team, Eastside College Prep shot 50.0% (23-of-46) for the day and 45.8% from behind the arc (11of-24).
  • Rolling Hills Prep, appearing in their first State Championship game, was led by freshman duo Alyssa Maxey and Naya Stroud contributing 12 and nine points respectively.
  • Sportsmanship Award Winners: Lauren Tsuji (Rolling Hills Prep) and Kayla Tahaafe (Eastside College Prep)
